Penny War

MHS students enjoyed a fun-filled assembly today to celebrate student success and recognize the winner of our Penny War hosted by Marion SLS and Band program.  MPACT members started the assembly by honoring all students who earned a spot on the second marking period honor roll.  Junior High Students were recognized recently during lunch and received their award. High School students were recognized today and enjoyed their crunchy, spicy snack with the message saying, “Congratulations on your FLAMING HOT academics!”

Earlier this month, 14 teachers and staff volunteered to compete in the Penny War to raise money for SLS training, sheet music, and uniform updates for the Band.  Each teacher was given a questionnaire to choose from a list of possible “prizes” they would accept should they win.   Many would say the “prizes” are more like punishments.  The “prize” choices included: dye your hair purple, wear a totally purple outfit for the day, paint your nails a silly color, shave your head, take a silly string shower, wear a crazy wig/hat, sing karaoke or rap, a pie in the face, duct taped to a wall, kiss a goat, or wear the Eagle Mascot suit for the day.  Mrs. Deighton took third place with a total of negative 10 cents.  In second place was Mrs. Britton with $3.34.  And the winner of the Penny War was Principal Sutten with a grand total of $30.25.

The finale of today’s assembly was Mrs. Sutten wearing a wonderfully crazy, rainbow ponytail hat and red lipstick while she kissed a baby goat!  Principal Sutten admitted the baby goat was “a little stinky,” but didn’t mind too much, though, since the little goat was SO CUTE!  Check out the photos.  The baby goat was provided by Alex and Kristopher Johnson and family.

Marion SLS and Band would like to thank all the students, teachers, and staff who participated in the 2023 Penny War.  The Marion chapter of Students Leading Students (SLS) is a 6th-12th grade youth-lead organization that promotes a positive school and community climate that helps youth to make good choices to remain safe, healthy, and free from alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.  The Marion Band entertains us, expands our music interests, and promotes school spirit while also competing at the District and State level.  Both of these programs must fundraise or seek sponsors to support their activities, trainings, presentations, competitions, trips, supplies, and materials.  If you are interested in donating to either program, please contact SLS Advisor, Ms. Stacy Baker sbaker@marion.k12.mi.us , Band Director, Mrs. Emily French efrench@marion.k12.mi.us or call MHS at 231-743-2836.
